Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss among Americans ages 65 and over. One way to reduce your risk of AMD is to quit smoking or never start. Following an eye-healthy diet can also work wonders for your vision. You can't control all your risks, however. For example, you can't do anything about your genetics. Knowing family medical history and sharing it with your ophthalmologist is an important step to protect your vision.... For patients at high risk for developing late-stage wet AMD, taking a specific, AMD dietary supplement lowers that risk by 25%. Always check with your ophthalmologist before starting any dietary supplement. Learn more in the AAO’s article here:
Want the inside scoop on all things LASIK? Luckily, this month we are featuring a step by step understanding of LASIK from before surgery to after. Check it out here:
Before LASIK surgery, you’ll need a basic vision and eye care consultation that allows your doctor to form a better idea if you’re a viable candidate for LASIK. This examination evaluates vision, dry eye, inflammation, high eye pressure, signs of infections, amongst an array of other things. If you have a concern about one of these issues (or any other you’ve noticed), alert your doctor. Once your appointment is completed, and you’ve been approved for LASIK, you’ll schedule another consultation, this time for the LASIK itself.
Laser cataract surgery is the most advanced method of removing cataracts. Laser-assisted cataract surgery requires no blade. Before the surgery, your surgeon will create a detailed surgical plan by mapping out the cornea using an OCT (optical coherence tomography). Then, a femtosecond laser is used to create the incision in an extremely precise manner. To get to the cataract, your surgeon must perform a capsulotomy. A thin, clear capsule surrounds the eye’s lens. The front po...rtion of the capsule needs to be removed to gain access to cataracts. This needs to be done without damaging the capsule. During traditional cataract surgery, this is done with a small needle. During laser-assisted cataract surgery, this is done with the laser. Finally, your surgeon will need to break up and remove the cataract. The laser helps soften the cataract and makes it easier to remove.
According to a recent study conducted at the University of Melbourne, a new global study has found no significant reduction in the number of people with treatable sight loss since 2010. They claim, Published in The Lancet Global Health, it examined population-based surveys of eye disease worldwide from 1980 and found public health services across the world are failing to meet targets to reduce avoidable sight loss. All laser custom LASIK refers to LASIK surgery that is performed without the use of blades and is completely tailored to each patient’s eyes. There are two things that separate this procedure from traditional LASIK surgery. The first is that instead of using a blade (called a microkeratome) to create the corneal flap on the eye, all laser LASIK implements the use of a femtosecond laser. The femtosecond laser creates a precise, durable corneal flap within seconds. The second difference is the custom aspect of the procedure. Before your all laser custom procedure, your surgeon will take a detailed image of the surface of your eye, mapping out where adjustments need to be made for optimal results. This is done using wavefront technology.
Each LASIK candidate has a unique set of general and eye health circumstances and lifestyle goals that need to be carefully assessed with the surgeon before electing to go ahead with the surgery. Although LASIK benefits many people, for others it may not be the best choice. Learn more about the questions to ask your doctor to see if LASIK is for you, by clicking here:

But seriously, what even are cataracts? Inside our eyes, we have a natural lens. The lens bends (refracts) light rays that come into the eye to help us see. The lens should be clear, but with cataracts the lens becomes cloudy. To learn more about cataracts, click on the link below:
